We’re chronicling 100 days of Indy 500 history on #SpeedRead leading up to the historic 100th Running. With 44 days to go, we look back with Josef Newgarden to his first Indy 500 experience.
It had to be around age 15 when I first saw the Indianapolis 500 in real life, and it’s a different view. It’s so cool on TV but you cannot feel the energy that this place creates and that’s the first thing I noticed. It’s one thing to watch it on TV, but you have to experience it in real life. It’s a bucket list item for sure! It’s like a concert, you have to go see it because it’s energy like you’ve never seen before.
I had the same initial reaction as most when I saw the Indy 500 for the first time, which is amazement at the sheer volume of people – I mean, how do they fit that many people into one place?! It goes to show we are all Hoosiers on Race Day.
