First, an apology. My weekly racing blog on the IMS Facebook page, “Slowing Down On The Backstretch,” has gone dark for the last few weeks. It’s been very, very busy around IMS as everyone is preparing for the Indianapolis 500, including launching of an all-new www.indianapolismotorspeedway.com.
For the 19 fans per week who read my idle ramblings about racing and music, I apologize. The blog will continue next week and every other week right here at its new home, the IMS blog.
There will be two races to write about this weekend, the Southern 500 at Darlington for NASCAR Sprint Cup on Saturday night (7 p.m. ET, FOX) and the Spanish Grand Prix at Barcelona on Sunday morning (7:30 a.m. ET, SPEED).
Darlington always is a good show because “The Lady in Black” is a true driver’s track. The Barcelona F1 race usually is a parade because teams test so often there during the offseason that setups are honed to perfection and drivers know the track even better than the number of zeroes in their fat bank accounts. So great setup and intimate track familiarity usually equal tedium. I hope I’m wrong. Pray for rain in Catalunya.
But as good as those two races might be, all roads in May lead to only one place: INDY. Indianapolis Star Opening Day for the 2010 Indianapolis 500 is one week from today: Saturday, May 15. If your heart isn’t beating a bit quicker over that thought, then either you’re not a racing fan or you better call for a defibrillator.
The 2010 Indianapolis 500 is just about here. I. AM. STOKED.
