Your tips for someone attending the 500 Festival Parade for the first time:

I have unfortunately never been able to go to the 500 Festival Parade.  This year will be my first year, and I’m actually in it.

This is what I am doing in my community as a representative of the Princess Program:

I am meeting with the 4th graders of Triton Elementary and Hendricks Elementary to talk to them about the 500 Festival and Race.  I am meeting with Shelby County Junior Leaders to talk to them about these events.  I am also going to the Indiana Masonic Home in Franklin to do race arts and crafts with the residents.

Your tips for someone attending the 500 Festival Parade for the first time:

Bring your family and friends to the IPL 500 Festival Parade. It’s a great way to spend time together. Be sure you are sitting somewhere you can see everything. Everyone has worked so hard on the floats and each one is different and spectacular. Also, bring an umbrella just in case, always better to be safe than sorry!

This is what I am doing in my community as a representative of the Princess Program:

I have several outreaches into the community that allow me to represent the Princess Program. I have scheduled 8 opportunities with different Johnson County 4-H clubs speaking on a number of topics, from Healthy Study Habits to my tips on sheep showmanship to how 4-H has prepared me for my future. I also have been using these scheduled talks as a way to share with others about what the Indianapolis 500 Festival Events have to offer. I also have a three week program series with the Girl Scouts of Central Indiana titled Uniquely Me! This program is designed to teach girls from grades 3-5 about self esteem and confidence. My program is unique in the fact that it uses “staples” of the Indianapolis 500 to help girls discuss their issues and know how to manage stress. For example, at one station, the girls will be learning how to listen to their inner voice through a process that uses the different colors of the flags used during the Indianapolis 500.

Your tips for someone attending the Indy 500 for the first time:

Enjoy every minute of it! It’s extremely loud and fast paced so make sure you keep up with your favorite driver and where they are in the race. Also, it can get extremely hot and sunny, so definitely make sure to drink plenty of water and wear sunscreen!

Your tips for someone attending the 500 Festival Parade for the first time:

As I haven’t been yet myself, I am going to take in every moment and enjoy it to the fullest! That is the advice I would give to a first time attendee, is to get there early for a good spot and stay for every minute of it!

This is what I am doing in my community as a representative of the Princess Program:

I am currently setting up an outreach at the Bell Trace retirement home in Bloomington, IN. Myself and other Princesses will be attending a weekly birthday party for the residents and helping with the festivities and celebration all while promoting the 500 Festival! Also the entire Princess Program is putting together Easter Baskets for the kids at Riley Children’s Hospital!

I am going to as many outreach opportunities as I can! So far I have been to multiple nursing homes and I have walked in the St. Patrick’s Day parade. Number of years you have attended the Indy 500? Never been!  The 500 Festival Parade? Also a new experience for me!

Your tips for someone attending the Indy 500 for the first time: Because I grew up in southern Indiana, over three hours away from Indy, it was never a tradition in my family to make the trip to Speedway for the race each Memorial Day. I’m most excited to experience the 500 and see what everyone has been raving about! I know that last year was the hottest race in history, so staying hydrated and wearing sunscreen is a must. If anyone has any tips for me as a first timer, I would love to hear them!

Your tips for someone attending the 500 Festival Parade for the first time: Because it’s the third largest parade in America, I’m sure arriving along the parade route to claim your seat early is a must. The biggest tip that the princesses have heard is if you know someone in the parade (and want them to see you!) be sure to bring a big sign!

This is what I am doing in my community as a representative of the Princess Program: In my hometown and college community, I am partnering with organizations I have a personal connection with. At Ball State, I’m doing outreaches with College Mentors for Kids, the Muncie Children’s Museum, and various schools and nursing homes in the area. At home in Jasper, I’m volunteering at the Dubois County Museum, speaking to elementary and high school students, as well as promoting the event to the local Kiwanis Club. Additionally, I want to show my support of racing by singing the National Anthem and passing out trophies at the Bloomington Speedway. Finally, I’m trying to support my fellow princess by attending their outreaches and helping out with all the 500 Festival events that I can!

My Greatest 33 Line-up and what’s worth checking out at TheGreatest33.com: On my greatest 33, I chose many rookies who did incredible things at the race. Like me, they experienced their first Indianapolis 500 in a big way and made their mark on its history! TheGreatest33.com was a big help in picking my drivers, because I’m not a racing buff. One driver I wish I could have included in my line up is Spike Gehlhausen, also a young rookie of the year, from my hometown of Jasper, Indiana. What a race it would be if all these drivers actually got to compete together!

This May, I’m most looking forward to seeing: The Pace Car reunion!

Your tips for someone attending the 500 Festival Parade for the first time: This is also my first time attending the 500 Festival Parade, and what better a time than when I am serving as an ambassador to the Indy 500 events!

This is what I am doing in my community as a representative of the Princess Program: As a representative of the Princess Program I have planned and scheduled various events throughout my community. I have created a multi-media presentation to showcase the history and fun facts about the Indianapolis 500. I have been sharing this with elementary schools from Jackson and Jennings County. I have also made an Indianapolis 500 Jeopardy game to share with local nursing homes. In addition, I will be appearing and participating in events at the Brownstown Speedway where we will be making a video to submit for the Back Home Again in Indiana Contest.

I am hosting an after school program at Hayden Elementary with 4-6th grade girls. Here I will speak about self-esteem and proper etiquette; we will also have race day snacks. I am volunteering at Girls Incorporated where I will do various crafts including making princess sashes. Lastly I am volunteering at an event titled Princess for a Day, which is a fundraiser and silent auction benefiting Flashes of Hope. “Flashes of Hope is a nonprofit organization that changes the way children with cancer and other life threatening illnesses see themselves through the gift of photography and raises money for pediatric cancer research.”

Number of years you have attended the Indy 500? 12  The 500 Festival Parade? 5

Your tips for someone attending the Indy 500 for the first time:

Because my dad is a former “Yellow Shirt” at the track, I know that the best advice is to get to the track as early as possible!  When the parking lots open at 5am, there is little traffic and a great spot is guaranteed.  Although it’s early, it’s nice to know that from that point on, you are able to relax and enjoy the atmosphere of the day.

Your tips for someone attending the 500 Festival Parade for the first time:

View the Parade twice!  Because the route loops around from Pennsylvania to Meridian, my family and I have learned that we can catch the beginning of the Parade on the west side of Pennsylvania and then walk only a block over to view the participants again as they head back up Meridian Street.  This technique takes a bit of stamina and sometimes being forced to watch the Parade from behind the crowds, but it is definitely worth it to see the “greatest spectacle in parading”… twice!

This is what I am doing in my community as a representative of the Princess Program:

I am reaching out to members of the Tippecanoe County Boys & Girls Club so that members can learn more about the race and 500 Festival.  I am also representing my school at Purdue’s Spring Fest and our annual Grand Prix race.  I look forward to talking with an Indy area Girl Scout Troop about what it takes and how fun it is to be a Princess!  Finally, I am so excited to becoming a tour guide for fourth grade students around the state taking a field trip to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Your tips for someone attending the Indy 500 for the first time:

Sunscreen! Besides that, arrive early so you don’t miss any of the pre-race festivities. During the race, it can get hot in the stands so I took some time to walk around and take in everything that is going on all around the race.  The Indianapolis 500 is a global attraction and what Indiana is known for making it truly a sight you must see to believe. And finally…sunscreen!

Your tips for someone attending the 500 Festival Parade for the first time:

Having never been to the 500 Festival Parade, I am full of advice for first time parade goers! Avoid standing behind tall people. Take snacks! I would suggest Cheez-Its because they are delicious and easy to pack. Wear as many brightly colored beads and flashy neon trinkets as possible.  The more you stand out the more likely you will be seen by float riders giving out free stuff! Avoid standing behind tall people. I am aware this is the second time I have written this suggestion.  It’s important so why not emphasize it. Bring a camera to take pictures….of me!!! And then tag me on Facebook. I suppose you could use your camera to take pictures of other things as well but…focus on my beauty first. Bring noise makers! Air horns are encouraged.  Everyone enjoys a good thunder stick (You know those blow up things you bang together that sound like thunder). Hopefully this helps make your first experience at the 500 Festival Parade enjoyable!

This is what I am doing in my community as a representative of the Princess Program:

Since being selected as a 500 Festival Princess, a million opportunities have opened up to help out my community and the Indianapolis 500!  Most of my responsibilities include spreading the word about the 500 Festival and the Indianapolis 500. So far, I have arranged to visit a few after-school programs in the IPS school district where I will educate our youth on what goes on during the month of May leading up to the race and the history of the Indianapolis 500!  I am also working on setting up a “Race-to-Read” program at the Hamilton East Public Libraries where children and teens will be rewarded for reading through prizes and incentives.  This experience has been so amazing and I cannot wait for May and all of the festivities to begin!

Your tips to someone attending the Indy 500 for the first time:

Be prepared and make sure to choose your seats wisely. Don’t forget ear plugs, Indy Cars are not quiet! Make sure to pack drinks and snacks. It will also make life a lot easier if you bring a cooler on wheels. Become a history buff. The fabulous staff of the Hall of Fame Museum provides Grand Tours to notable and exclusive Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) landmarks, as well as rich IMS history. This year is even more significant since it is the 100th anniversary of the inaugural Indianapolis 500 in 1911. Find out why Indianapolis is the “Racing Capital of the World” and be a part of the tradition! If you are visiting Indy for the race, make a weekend out of it! Attend Miller Lite Carb Day Friday to see the last practice and the pit stop competition. Reserve tickets for the IPL 500 Festival Parade, one of the nation’s most premier parades, on Saturday. Later that evening, bring your camera to spot some celebrities arriving on the red carpet to attend the Snakepit Ball at Indiana Roof Ballroom. Don’t limit yourself to just the Indy 500! There are awesome things the whole family will enjoy during the entire month of May. Check out www.indianapolismotorspeedway.com and www.500festival.com/events/ for descriptions of the some of the coolest things to do in Indianapolis all year!

Your tips for someone attending the 500 Festival Parade for the first time: You should start out by familiarizing yourself with downtown Indianapolis. Make sure you know where to park and how to get to your seats. You do not want to miss anything considering the 500 Festival Parade ranks in the top three parades in the nation! Also, don’t forget your camera! The parade is a prime time to snap pictures up-close of Indy Car drivers, VIPs and your favorite costume characters. Appreciate tradition! The 500 Festival Parade has been kicking off race weekend for 54 years. The parade has come a long way since its first route in 1957 and now entertains nearly 300,000 spectators with floats, bands, celebrities and more!

This is what I am doing in my community as a representative of the Princess Program: The Princess Program has given myself and the other princesses several opportunities to get involved in the community. During March, April and May I am visiting classrooms and schools to bring in fun and educational activities incorporating the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the 500 Festival. The Indianapolis 500 Race is an important part in our state’s history and children are eager to hear about its impact. While in classrooms I also encourage students and families to take advantage of all the fun, kid-friendly events during the 500 Festival.

In addition, my fellow princesses and I will be volunteering at Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and Mutt Strut. We are also making Easter baskets and cards for children in each of the rooms at Riley Hospital.

My Greatest 33 Line-up and what to check out on TheGreatest33.com: To see my dream Indianapolis 500 line-up, click here. The “Try the Driver Comparison” on TheGreatest33.com is a fun, interactive way to look at drivers and statistics. If you are somewhat a rookie to racing like myself, this will be a vital tool for picking your Greatest 33! After you have chosen your drivers, make sure you enter the sweepstakes on the site to win some cool prizes!

Your tips for someone attending the Indy 500 for the first time: Since this is my first time attending the Indianapolis 500 I am both excited and curious to experience everything the race and festival has to offer! I would still advise anyone who is attending the race to go to as many events during the month of May as possible and to make the most of their time at the track by getting their friends and family involved such as attending Community Day, Kids Day and the IPL Parade. Also pack water and dress appropriately for a day at the track!

Your tips for someone attending the 500 Festival Parade for the first time: This will also be my first year experiencing the IPL 500 Festival Parade firsthand and I am very excited for this event! There are over 300,000 people who attend the IPL 500 Festival Parade so order your tickets early, try to get good seats and bring your kids!

This is what I am doing in my community as a representative of the Princess Program: As an ambassador and representative for the Indianapolis 500 Festival Princess Program I will be speaking to local elementary schools, Girl Scout troops, churches, hospitals and at an Indianapolis 500 Family Night at the YMCA about the Indianapolis 500 Festival and race. Number of Years you’ve have been to the Indy 500? 0   To the 500 Festival Parade? I am excited to say I will be attending my very first Indy 500 as a Festival Princess! What a better way to experience my first Indy 500! As for the parade, my family and I attended several years on a cold and windy day. Hopefully we will have better luck with the weather this time around! Actually being a part of this major Festival event will be a once in a lifetime experience, and I could not be more excited!

Your tips for someone attending the Indy 500 for the first time: Since I have never been to the 500, I am not exactly sure what to expect! However, from what I have heard, wear your sunscreen, stay hydrated, and as always, take lots of pictures! I plan on soaking up as much of this experience as possible!

Your tips for someone attending the 500 Festival Parade for the first time: For first time attendees of the parade, I would suggest arriving to the parade route early to stake out a great seat. Once you find your seat, be prepared to play the waiting game. Despite the waiting, this will be a fun experience and you will see some neat people in the parade, including the Princesses! Enjoy every minute!

This is what I am doing in my community as a representative of the Princess Program: As a representative of the Princess Program, I have been working most with Mintonye Elementary School in Lafayette, IN. I am currently student teaching in a 4th grade class at Mintonye. One of the major aspects of the 4th grade curriculum is Indiana history. As a part of this, I have incorporated the Indianapolis 500 with our history lessons! The students have loved this so far! As a part of our last week of the unit, we will be having our own race, and the student will be able to have a photo opportunity with the official pace car and other princesses! This has been a great way to get the students excited to learn about the history of the race and Indiana as a whole. I cannot wait for the last week of our unit!

Another aspect of my community involvement will be volunteering at the Susan G. Komen Breast Tissue Donation Bank at the end of April. I donated tissue a year ago, and this will be a great way to continue my involvement and help further a great cause.

My Greatest 33 Line-up and what’s worth checking out at TheGreatest33.com: Click here to check out my dream Indianapolis 500 line-up on TheGreatest33.com. My Greatest 33 Line-Up is lead by three drivers who really made history in Indianapolis. Louis Meyer was the first driver to drink milk in the winner’s circle, Janet Guthrie was the first female driver, and Ray Harroun was the first winner of the Indianapolis 500. Without these three drivers, the Indy 500 would not be what it is today, the greatest spectacle in racing. The second row is composed of the three most recent winners of the 500, Dario Franchitti, Helio Castroneves, and Scott Dixon. The third row of my line-up is composed of quite possibly the most successful Indy 500 drivers. A.J. Foyt, Al Unser, and Rick Mears are the three four time winners. Beyond the third row, I intermixed current and past drivers randomly.

Creating my Greatest 33 line-up was a fun experience! It gave me an opportunity to learn more about past and current drivers, and gain even more respect for this grueling sport. I am looking forward to learning more about the drivers as the event approaches.

Your tips for someone attending the Indy 500 for the first time:

Go to all the festival events! Experiencing the atmosphere is what makes the 500 more than just another race. There’s always something to see or do and a lot of it is free! On Race day leave early, my family members always leave early in the morning to get good parking at the track and to beat the traffic. Pack some patience. There are tons of people from all of the world! While that can be very exciting and cool it can also make things quite hectic. My most important tip is to bring your sun block and umbrella. If it isn’t raining you’re probably getting fried. Nothing says race day like tan lines where your shades were!

Your tips for someone attending the 500 Festival Parade for the first time:
The most important rule of thumb for the parade is to get there early. There are always tons of people and if you want a good seat up front you’ll want to beat the crowd. Also bring a camera, all the drivers and tons of celebrities are in the parade and you won’t want to miss out on the photo opportunity!

This is what I am doing in my community as a representative of the Princess Program: To help out my community I am organizing a group of princesses to help out at this years Susan G Komen Race for the Cure. We will help raise awareness by educating participants on breast cancer and help put on smile on everyone’s face by passing out prizes! I also will be making trips to local elementary schools in Lafayette and Indianapolis to educate children on the 500 festival and the Indy 500.

Number of Years you’ve have been to the Indy 500 ? Twice To the 500 Festival Parade? I have been to the Indy 500 twice, and this will be my first year to attend the 500 Festival Parade. I am looking forward to this new experience!

Your tips for someone attending the Indy 500 for the first time: Expect loud noises/bring ear protection. Be prepared for the weather. Sunny- sunscreen/hat/water bottle. Rainy- rain gear/dry set of clothing. Temperature- dress in layers to keep warm or shed clothing if temperature increases. Make the most of your experience. Watch the pre-race concerts. Check out the pits. Keep an eye out for celebrities. Explore the shops. Walk around the inside of the track. Enjoy the food!

Your tips for someone attending the 500 Festival Parade for the first time I will be attending the 500 Festival Parade for the first time this year! I have experienced many other parades, and my advice for any parade would be to arrive early to get a good seat, take your camera to get lots of pictures, and by all means cheer loud for your favorite float.

This is what I am doing in my community as a representative of the Princess Program: Volunteer work is a very large part of this program! In my college community, I will be attending multiple elementary schools to read to and share the Indy 500 information with the students. At Purdue’s Spring Fest, I will be assisting young girls in making their own sashes, and I will be a participant in the Purdue Grand Prix Parade. I also hosted a “100th Anniversary Party” for the Indy 500 for the ladies on the 8th floor of Shreve Hall, where I currently live. I baked cupcakes and brought milk (an Indy 500 tradition). Pizzas and pop were provided as well.

In my hometown area, I have been in contact with my local hospital, elementary school principal, town officials, and librarian. I will read to the children and/or participate in activities as they become available. I have also been interviewed by my local newspaper and provided information that I am available for volunteer work and guest appearances.

My Line-up on TheGreatest33.com: Click here to view my dream Indianapolis 500 line-up on TheGreatest33.com! I selected these drivers because some names I recognized from past races or past wins. Others I just enjoy watching during the race. The website contains a significant amount of information about many of the top drivers. You can learn about each driver, compare them with other drivers, view pictures, and share your stories with other fans.

This May, I’m most looking forward to seeing: World’s Largest Autograph Session

Number of Years you’ve have been to the Indy 500 _____? To the 500 Festival Parade____? I haven’t had the chance to attend either of these events yet, but I cannot wait to attend my first Indy 500 this year!

Your tips for someone attending the Indy 500 for the first time: I would say enjoy it and just try to take it all in!

Your tips for someone attending the 500 Festival Parade for the first time: Make a sign if you want someone’s attention, and embrace all the different aspects of the event.

This is what I am doing in my community as a representative of the Princess Program: As a representative for the Princess Program, I’ve done many community outreaches in order to inform the community about the Indianapolis 500 as well as the Princess Program. I’ve attended a Students vs. Staff basketball game where I played on a team and then spoke to the players about the Festival. I also went to a boys and girls after school program for at-risk children and played Indy 500 themed games. All of the princess are working their hardest to reach the community with their creative outreaches, and we are all looking forward to going as a group to many community outreaches also!

Your tips for someone attending the Indy 500 for the first time: Be sure to get to the track early in order to watch the pre-race activities and ceremonies. Make sure that you do not leave early because the last 10 laps of the race have always been the most exciting. Try to get your picture in front of all the landmark signs and statutes that signifies you attended the Indianapolis 500. Then take as many pictures as possible throughout the whole race. If you can, visit the Hall of Fame Museum to learn as much history as you can possibly can before the green flag drops. Grab some food and get ready for an action packed afternoon that you will never forget. Do not forget to buy a souvenir t-shirt and program on your way out. Most importantly, MAKE IT MEMORABLE!

Your tips for someone attending the 500 Festival Parade for the first time: The 500 Festival Parade is a sight to see. All the floats are spectacular and getting the chance to all 33 drivers who will start in Indianapolis 500 the following day is exciting. If you can, try to sit as close to Monument Circle as possible. For me, I enjoyed feeling the spirit of the City of Indianapolis while watching the 500 Festival Parade. Before the 500 Festival Parade begins make sure to take the little ones to the 500 Festival Character Breakfast that feature the characters that are starring in the parade. However, the best way to view the 500 Festival Parade is to be a volunteer with the 500 Festival. Being a volunteer is how I received the chance to view my first 500 Festival Parade and it was an experience I will never forget!

This is what I am doing in my community as a representative of the Princess Program: I will be visiting the Golden Living Center Nursing Home in Kokomo, Indiana, to help with their residents and it will be a day filled with the racing theme. Throughout April, I will be visiting four elementary schools promoting the 500 Festival, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indianapolis 500.

At one school in Kokomo, I will be putting on a “Mini Indy Day” where the 4th and 5th graders will get a chance to learn about the history of the Indianapolis 500® and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, have an opportunity to sit in and get their picture taken with different race cars from three series and the chance to meet one of the Firestone Indy Lights driver’s, Bryan Clauson. Also, I will be participating in Indianapolis’s Lemonade Day and the Annual March of Dimes Walk in Kokomo, Indiana.

In the coming months, I will also be making appearances on the local radio stations in Kokomo, Indiana, promoting the 500 Festival, Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Indianapolis 500®.Along with a group of other princesses, we will be attending an Indiana Pacers game, Pinewood Derby for the Boy Scouts of America, visiting the children at Peyton Manning’s Children Hospital, participating in the Susan G. Komen’s Race for the Cure in Downtown Indianapolis, volunteering at Mutt Strut at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and volunteering at The Greatest Spectacle in Tasting in Kokomo, Indiana, benefiting Bona Vista Programs. Most importantly, myself along with the other thirty-two princesses will be attending the events put on by the 500 Festival and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway promoting the Indianapolis 500!

My Dream Line-up on TheGreatest33.com and what’s cool about the site: View my dream Indianapolis 33 line-up on the TheGreatest33.com My line-up of the Greatest 33 drivers are the best at their trade who have ran numerous laps at the famous 2.5 mile oval. Growing up in a racing family, all the names on my starting grid have been drivers that I learned to familiarize myself with when their names appeared. The drivers on my starting grid have led the most laps, led the most miles, have won over 50 Indianapolis 500 races and have turned the fastest lap in the history of the race (only to name a few statistics). Ray Harroun was given the pole position because he is the pioneer. Harroun paved the way for the rest of the 32 drivers in the starting grid and each driver that has had the opportunity to race in the Indianapolis 500. Names like Foyt, Andretti, Unser, Bettenhausen, Jones and Mays are the reason that the Indianapolis 500 is as special today as it was when it first started in 1911. Not only have the 33 drivers complied some of the best statistics in auto racing, but each one of them have played a part in making the sport become more successful. As much of a race fan that I am, I wish that this line-up could become reality, but I could not begin to decide who would win….

Being able to learn more about the top 100 drivers that are chosen to pick from to make the Greatest 33 line-up is fantastic. I really enjoyed learning fun facts about the drivers throughout the history of the Indianapolis 500. Also, the opportunity to enter a sweepstakes by making a Greatest 33 line-up is an added bonus. Another added bonus was the ability to incorporate social media when creating the Greatest 33 line-up.
