Just a thought…Can you imagine any of todays 500 drivers walking out to the line on race day morning wearing a straw cowboy hat??? Sort of says it all. Man…it WAS good…or can I say “gooder”…lol God forbid the drivers be allowed to wonder around on race day morning talking and just BS ing with people in the pits. Now their “PR” guy makes sure they do everything PC……

OH NO! With thousands of photos in the Speedway Archives I thought this would go on forever. We were all having so much fun arguing too. At some point in all of this Mr. Davidson you should have posted a picture of YOU! Many of us started on our path toward history appreciation under your guidance. THANK YOU! I’ll see you in May and hopefully get to shake your hand.

A huge “thank you” to you, Donald, and of course, to the photo staff of both yesteryear and today! This has been a treat each day, and we’ll miss it for sure. As I previously wrote on this blog, reading the personal experiences of all the fans that have posted here, Dennis Johansen especially, along with Racenutdon, IndyPacer, Rick Wampler, Chris Blackwell, DJ Blythe, Bill Schiel, and so many others, have made this an even better read each day! It’s obvious that all of us share a passion for the Speedway and it’s history. Thanks to all, and now let’s get to work and pick those “33 Best”!

To you Donald…Thank you for this blog but tahnk you more our friendship of 47 years. I think of you everyday as I look at the picture of you, the Buzzer and me laughing at what Buzz had just said….but sadly it never happened for him….The old Firestone office was once the meeting place for high level stuff…. Also have the pic of us, dad , McQuinn and Sachs as we heard the famous story about sending Sachs home. memories etched in my mind forever my freind.

To the great staff at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway….Thank you for Blog. Mr Davidson The IMS has a Diamond in the rough when it comes to you. Your knowledge and passion for the Indy 500 is second to none. It has been a great learning experience reading Gasoline Alley Unplugged everyday.

Parnelli would be sporting that same hat a few hours later when he drank the milk in Victory Lane.

I’d like to thank Donald and the IMS staffers who provided us with all these great memories. I’ve listened to every one and it has been a part of my daily routine that I looked forward to these past six months or so. I’m sorry it had to end so soon, I was hoping it might continue all the way up to race time. Anyway, I’ll be eagerly awaiting the month of May when I can listen to Donald live on the internet as he does “The Talk of Gasoline Alley” once again. And though I can’t be there in May, I have secured my ticket for the Brickyard 400 in July and I can’t wait to experience a race there in person for the first time.

If it were not for Donald Davidson, the staff of the Speedway, and this mighty thing we call “the Internet,” probably 7/8ths of the world would NEVER EVER know these little insights into the granddaddy of all races known as “the 500.”
Mr. Davidson, you sir are the REASON I look forward to these posts. I have not come across one yet that I’d say “I didn’t need to know that.” Each post is a look behind that invisible barrier that we all wish we could be on the other side of, and now we are, thanks to you. THANK YOU MR. DAVIDSON!!!!!!

What a great time it was reading these every day.! Soon will be a year but did enjoy them. So many of the times we don’t think of, but so great to have a little glimpse back in time to get us started thinking of it. Thanks Donald D. for helping to preserve this great history. Also want to thank Ron McQueeney for forty some years of great photo’s and all his work getting so many of these older prints digitized for all of us to enjoy. And thank you IMS for making it all possible.!!!
