THANK GOD TONY HULMAN SAVED THE SPEEDWAY!!!!! Just think what racing would have become without the 500 and all he did to restore our SHRINE?!!!! Thanks TONY…NEVER FORGOTTEN!!!! As much as I appreciate Tony for keeping the speedway alive, I have to give almost equal credit to Wilbur Shaw for tirelessly campaigning to save the track and hunting Tony up. As great and as humble a man that I hear Mr. Hulman was, he would probably agree that Wilbur was a much a savior of IMS as he was.
I also find it incredible that the Wasp has survived to today- I don’t think too many of the other winners from teens and ’20s are still around.

Dennis- yeh “Gentleman Start Your Engines” is one of my favorite all-time racing books. So sad to read the last page with Wilbur talking about how much he is enjoying his life at this point as Prez. of the speedway and having a family etc. and then just months later he was gone.
