Very nostalgic. I love these older color photos. They let you imagine what it was like to be there. Look at the uneven bricks in the foreground
Great photo. What a gorgeous day! Makes me really look forward to May.
The bricks were absolutelynt even. You could see the tires bouncing as the cars came down the frontstretch. Thats one reason why it took a man with the strength of a bull to do it. Females couldnt have done it then. The one thing about those iron men was they didnt think they were anything special at all…just ordinary guys who loved to drive race cars. Remmeber..39% of those guys driving between 1959 and 1959 died in a race car so you know they had to REALLY love what thet did so well…..It was good then…much better than today…but I suppose people will be saying the same thing about 2011 in 2051 …
uuuhh make that absolutely uneven and it was between 1950 and 1959……
I, too, love the old photos especially the color images. I’ve seen this photo many times but would like to have as many of the men in the photo identified as possible. Jim Rathman is the only driver I can identify.
They all look like good buddies, a racing fraternity….
when the ’52 Green Flag waved….anything but….
Bill Vuckovick sliced his way to the lead….and dominated
until inside of 10L…he rear axel broke handing the
race to the 500′s youngest ever winner Troy Ruttman
and one hit wonder….
My dad Art Cross drove at Indy 52-55m
. Looking for film video of any/all races. Has anyone identified. The drivers in the photo?
