Yep… This one has always been my favorite photo.
Two giants of Indy, along with the great roadster Calhoun.
My first year to be at Indy in person…what wonderful memories!
The link to the audio points to Donald’s commentary on the Jim Clark / AJ Foyt photo.
So many people are not aware of how much “AGGIE” did for auto racing. He was resposnible for bringing back midget racing in Calif, CRA would no have survived for so long without AGGIE. He brought back “TURKEY NIGHT” when he created ASCOT. Ascot was THE race track on the west coast and every open wheel race driver looked forward to trying out Ascot. Great dirt and there was nothing like heading down the backstretch to turn 3. Toy could run in right against the crash wall, up high and GAS IT! Problem is, when u ran outside weight, like I did, turn 1 was a bitch. and really cud quite scary but man what a ride. Thx Aggie….for Ascot and thyx for the memories.
DJ has it right, two giants of The Speedway. My first 500 was 1967 and sitting in Stand B I remember during pre-race festivities Aggie walking on the track all the way to turn one waving to the applauding crowd. What a showman.
Two of the all time great from Indy. This was my second year at Indy. First time ever (1961) I saw a head go by as I walked up to the front straight. I asked my friend – What the devil was that? From that point on I was hooked. These two created excitement at the 500 and other tracks such as milwaukee and Daytona. Two great individuals

Aggie had some great drivers….one of the greatest race drivers ever was his driver who won the 52 500. Troy Ruttman was, in my opinion, right behind Bill Vukovich . he was really a great race car driver but was fantastic at the Speedway..even though he won only once AND at the expense of Bill V.
Does anyone have any information on formr sprint/midget
driver Lloyd Corbin? Also does anyone have any pictures
of the races at Ascot from 1955 t0 1962. He crashed in the
firs turn at Ascot in Jan of 62. He was my wifes father.
If anyone was has anypics or the old super 8 movies it
would be very much appreciated.
Dave,
I have no pictures of Lloyd Corbin, but I knew him. My parents worked for the press, and Lloyd was a friend of the family. I was there when he had his terrible accident. I was only nine years old, but I remember it well. Is he still around?
Sorry to say he was killed bt a friek accident with a portable saw mill. If you know of anyone that might have some pics of his accident at ascot in Jan./92 would be
appreciated.
Dave, I have several picture of Lloyd Corbin driving the Clayton young midget from 1959, if you contact me I will scan them and send them to you. I worked on that car when Lloyd drove it, and he also drove my car in 1960 and was leading the main event at Ascot when the rear end broke. In about 1970 Lloyd bought a car that I drove for him in El Toro, and wouldn’t you know it broke the rear end too.
To Loren Chiever. I appoligize for not writing back sooner but I lost the info to this site. Finaly found it. It would be great if you could send me the pics you have of Lloyd driving.
Would love to show them to our sons and grand kids.My e-mail is chiliandbean2367@charter.net Would appreciate any and all pics you have. Do you live here in California still? Maybe we could get together and swap stories about the old days of raceing.
