Bobby had the first Turbocharged Offy victory in 68.
This must have been about the last Turbo Offy Victory.
I know that in 77, AJ won with a Turbo Foyt motor in a Foyt Coyote car. Seems like Lonestar JR had the last offy in 76. My memory is still slathered in rust from those monsoon years.
JR did have the last Offy to win in 1976.
Here’s some more interesting trivia on Bobby Unser’s Indianapolis career, and this will especially interest those who are into numbers like I am. The number 3 always seemed to follow him around. He was a 3-time winner of course, in two of those wins he started 3rd (and started 3rd five times in all), drove the number 3 car to victory twice, drove cars bearing 3 or multiples thereof in no less than 14 of his 19 races (including the 48 seen above that he also won with), and was the first to win in 3 different decades (only Rick Mears has done that since). And his rookie year was 1963, to boot.
AND THREE Unsers are on the Borg Warner Trophy. I was 10 in ’75 and I remember that it started raining so fast, so hard. It was crazy. Rain messed up what could have been a very exciting finish. JR was catching Bobby and Foyt was in 3rd running faster than both of them.
Interesting-Never have givien a thought to the fact that Dan only fielded one winner himself given how prolific his cars were…
Dan was/is a genious and what happened to Dan Gurney is really very simple…I was there..I saw it happen and the old CART loyals can deny it all they want ..BUT the fact is…CART PURPOSELY MADE GURNEYS CARS ILLEGAL. What blows me away is that Dan continued to be loyal to CART. THAT… is what destroyed ALL AMERICAN RACERS Indy car program . Politics play such a big part in our sport. AND thats ok if its politics that are on your side…:).. Wayne Leary, Bobbys chief mechanic…was a genious…. Per Bobby….”Wayne Leary can fix anything!” The sign proclaiming that hung on the wall in the SIMPSON room for years…..
I loved the sound of those Drake Turbo Offy engines.
