That qual run of Bobby Unser is on youtube and is awsome. The sound is a little scratchy, but it brings back some great memories

Agreed, that 1963 Indy line up looks like real race cars.

Watched this race with my Dad from front row in first turn. Will never forget it.

Tom Carnegie repeated his calls often. My guess is that Tom knew that us mortals in the seats couldn’t hear him some of the time because of car noise in our viewing area. Repetition increased his chances of being heard. Tom has a golden voice. He announced the Indiana state basketball championship game in the movie “Hoosiers.”

This was my 3rd 500,my dad and i set in stand c. We were big fans of Parnelli and herk! The old man bet 50$ that parnelli would lead the 1st lap.It was about the only lap he did not lead.looking forward to my 51st 500 this year, thank you for sharing these great stories.

Although Roger and Sachs claimed to have spun in PJ s oil, they were the only two to spin….so all the other finishers were able to “miss” the oil supposedly laid down by Parnelli. During that era, after the race, the entire track had oil on it.
39 drivers ,40%, of the drivers who competed in the 500 from 1950 to 1959 died in a race car.

Dennis’ stat on fatalities is incredible. The “good old days” weren’t always good.

At the Victory Banquet that year, Eddie Sachs told Parnelli that he shouldn’t have won the race and Parnelli punched him.
