Mario and Roger are in “street” clothes.
    Mario, Johnny, Roger and Parnelli.
I thought Parnelli looked tall until I saw that he and Roger were standing up on the curb.
I love seeing these vintage photos. Great memories! Thanks

OK so where is “The Rest Of The Story”… It was September & Johnny was all dressed up like that for One Reason~ To unseat Parnelli for a few laps in Andy Granatelli’s Swooosh-mobile. The # 40 STP Turbine Car was cutting edge, state of the art fast. Not to mention scary to USAC & owners with out turbine cars. I wonder how much this P.R. OP. had on getting the Lotus Turbine, Flying Door Stops allowed 6 months later? I was allowed to lock up the Photo Shop across from the main gate & watch Parnelli & Johnny take turns showing off “Ol #40 one last time…

Andy Granatelli briefly refers to this in his autobiography. He claimed Carson did a lap at over 135mph, which was only about 30 mph less than Parnelli qualified the turbine at in May. Also note the microphones around Johnny’s and Parnelli’s necks– clearly all this was being filmed, probably for a Tonight Show segment. Wonder if any of the footage is still around?

I’m sure IMS Photo Shop has B&W Stills for sale. Yes the runs were taped with sound for Tonight Show. Don’t know if any still exist, but if you see #40 driving with all brown infield grass in the background… THAT was this run, done close to my 18th birthday, 17 Sept 1967. I believe Johnny’s helmet was striped simmilar to Parnelli’s, except for “Johnny” painted on the side. Sorry, but I have not been able to find my pics from Box Seats outside of Turn 1. Nuts.

I remember seeing Parnelli on the Tonight Show sometime after the 1967 race. They did show film of Carson driving the turbine car.
I’ll have to see if that episode is in the “best of Carson” set my mother in law gave me!

No, it is not in any of the Johnny Carson Tonight Show DVD sets currently available. While makng an appearance on a local talk show at my station in the early ’90s, Steve Allen told me that almost all of the Carson shows prior to 1969, along with the Steve Allen and Jack Paar Tonight Shows, were destroyed by an incompetent NBC archive warehouse manager in Camden, N.J., because he decided he, “needed more room.” A lot of other shows got destroyed too. Thus, this clip of Johnny driving the car is probably one of those lost forever. If you purchase any of the Carson DVDs, you will notice that about 95% of the clips are from the ’70s and beyond.

Footage is available in the Johnny Carson best of DVD set. I have it, it’s under the” danger Johnny” bonus clips.
