Oh to go back in time…just for a day! I love how wide the track was back then.
This is the first race I missed in 11 years. Was in Viet Nam and listened to the radio broadcast from the roof of the barracks I live in. Dropped the radio cheering for Mario and had to buy it from the friend who loaned it to me.
where’s the missing car?
Since I have to spend my Mays now in Charlotte, I too love these photos. I grew up in Muncie, and the 500 was the third-best day of the year behind Christmas and birthday!
While Christmas and Easter are more meaningful, Indy 500 Raceday is THE BEST DAY ofthe year. Everybody has a birthday.
Is there any significance with the front row containing A. J. ’67 winner; Bobby Unser ’68 winner; Mario to be the ’69 winner?
Diverse indeed. 13 different makes of chassis (some older models featured revised bodywork), 4 types of engines including Repcos for the Brabham team and Gurney’s stockblock, and 25 Goodyears to 8 Firestones (Mario ran on the latter). A stark contrast to today’s fields. And the drivers were just as diverse– USAC, NASCAR, F1 & sports cars all being represented. I can’t wait to see how many different combinations we get in 2012!
Wish it was that way now instead of a spec series
It’s is great to see all the cars in formation for the start. While I understand the need for safety I feel we can have a little better formation for today’s racing
